You'll find a lot of hidden doors and hidden items that way. My last bit of advice is read the message bottles. The grasping ring is good, the amber idol is used for transmutation which is how you get the harder to get weapons and the boss weapons. I find the Flint and Steel and the Steel Centipede to be the most fun weapons to mess around with.

If you like range then great swords or spears are probably your best bet. If you like heavy then the warhammer is fairly early on in the game, after the third boss. They give you a nice bump into a skill line but not enough to make a big difference.
